Microsoft Visual Studio Shell 2008 - ENU is the English-language runtime of the Visual Studio 2008 IDE that enables developers and software vendors to build and distribute custom tools and branded development environments on top of the Visual Studio platform. It provides the core IDE framework—such as menus, tool windows, editors, solution and project management, and extensibility services—without the full Visual Studio product.

The Shell is available in two modes:

• Integrated mode, which merges with an existing Visual Studio 2008 installation.
• Isolated mode, which allows an application to run as a standalone IDE without requiring Visual Studio to be installed.

This package is often installed as a prerequisite by third-party applications built on the Visual Studio Shell. It is not a full version of Visual Studio; by itself, it does not include Microsoft programming languages, compilers, or standard Visual Studio features unless they are provided by the host application. ENU indicates the English (United States) edition.
